It has been over a year since we saw underdog’s debut EP, Point Blank touch down on Digital Blus. Undoubtedly, Can Celik has been busy, releasing tracks on Funkstuff Recordings and pushing his radio show, Soulfood on Dinamo.fm. In another positive light, one of the tracks from this EP, Your Smile, has gotten rotation from none other than liquid don, LTJ Bukem. Some say that a dream can develop into reality overnight, and we at Blu Saphir can say that Can Celik has gone from his moniker of underdog to climbing the stairway to the stars.
DIGIBLUS036: UNDERDOG – GOOD OLD LOVE EP
A. GOOD OLD LOVE
B. RIFIFI
C. YOUR SMILE
D. SCULPTRESS
RELEASE DATE: 09.10.2015
The title track of the EP, Good Old Love plays within the blueprint of so many of the Digital Blus tracks we’ve come to love over the last decade. Jazzy strings, stylish vocal hooks, and a smooth drop into the dance is the way to do it when these liquid greats are around. The drums roll while the bass moves the floor. Stuttered break patterns weave their entrance and exit while “Let me love you” can be heard in the backdrop.
As Rififi comes through, organic basslines, keys, and brass introduce the number. Lounge vibes are prominent here, but don’t allow that to stop you from dancing. Energy moves throughout, being caught by a delicious string breakdown, leading into a subtle drop. Fire this one up on the jukebox all night. Call for the rewind (a few times)!
Stepping forward, bliss comes out of Your Smile. We’re sure you’ll be smiling to this one. Cheeky jazz hooks play under a brilliant female vocal as the bassline walks. The drums are top notch, sailing the tune forward alongside a muted trumpet. Following the drop, a trombone makes its way to accompany the trumpet, while the singing continues. Top notch tune sure to become a classic!
Underdog flips the script on Sculptress, smashing out a late 90s/early 2000s style roller very reminiscent of some of the releases from Decoder and Breakbeat Era, and labels like Emotif and Prototype. Chopped up vocal samples compliment mechanical soundscapes, creating a head nod of epic proportions from the listener. Others may experience auditory euphoria – the ability to ‚phase out‘ of reality, without the use of any of those fun party favors. Repeat more than once.
