English Version
Hey Jonny, thanks for taking the time for this interview. Maybe we start with you introducing yourself. What is your name, where do you come from and on which labels do you currently release music?
Hi I’m Jonny AKA Motiv based in Manchester. Im currently releasing music with Co-lab, Nuusic, Delta9 and soon Dread Recordings.
You’re in your mid twenties, which means you were born when drumandbass was a big thing already. Did you grow up listening to dnb? Or what was your musical socialisation?
I grew up listening to all sorts of stuff but I was heavily into hip hop. This is where I learnt about sequencing, sampling and producing. Off the back of this I discovered dubstep, jungle and breakbeat. The first dnb track I ever heard was ‘LTJ Bukem – Atlantis’ and after that I was fascinated. During school I was pretty much obsessed with music and trying to produce my own stuff rather than the work. Im originally from a city in the north of UK called ‘Carlisle’ and there is not much of a community for what I wanted to do so I decided to move to Manchester where there is a vibrant music scene.
Which year did you start producing and when did you start doing drumandbass?
Started producing about 2010, I was really young so it has taken me a long long time to learn and develop my sound. Iv gone through multiple alias doing multiple genres but finally settled on motiv doing dnb about 2016-17
I think the first release of yours that I heard was the first EP on Sub-Liminal some years ago. Is there a certain release that was like a door opener for you? When people started knowing who Motiv is?
Oh yeah I remember that, I still play a track from that EP in my sets. I think that my Dead Reckoning EP that came out on Sub-Woofah pretty much kicked things off after moving to Manchester. The track ‘Suicide Thing’ was the first track that got a lot of exposure by getting played on Noisia Radio and getting played out by other DJ’s at shows.
The Sub-Liminal EP I was talking of about already had what I’d call the „Motiv-sound“. How would you describe your sound?
I think for the more dancefloor stuff I make is sub orientated and I use a lot of distortion units for sounds. I have recycled some of the same sounds in a lot of my music, but I try to keep every track a different vibe. Apart from this, I make a lot of different genres and styles for example my liquid stuff. I enjoy producing liquid the most and I want to concreate on this as I feel this is where I shine. I try not to keep a certain sound with these tracks, allowing me to explore different influences and portray emotions and feeling.
Do you work with analog gear or it it all inside the box?
I work mainly in Ableton, occasionally I use outboard gear from Salford studios and incorporated instruments.
Some days ago we were talking about setting a focus on either production or DJing. How do you handle it? Are you mainly a producer or are you planning to DJ more in the future?
Its pretty easy for me. I get the odd booking here and there so it’s not too much trouble. I would love to get more bookings and get the chance to play my music around the UK and even internationally. I do music every day though whether its producing or playing an instrument, I can’t go through a day without being musical so that part comes naturally.
Is there a label you absolutely want to release on in the future?
Yeah Metalheadz. Id love to make some liquid orientated tracks for them. They’ve always been the top label so it is one of my biggest aims.
And is there like a colab you’re dreaming of doing with a certain producer or vocalist?
I am very open to making music with people so I don’t really have a dream colab sort of speak. However, I would love to get DRS or Jenna G on a track.
What releases are coming up next?
I have a lot of music coming out on Co-Labs sister label ‘Liquid Lab’, including a solo EPs, collabs and my first album will hopefully be finished with vocalist Charla Green at the end of the year. Other than this I have a 6 track EP coming out on Dread Recordings which im buzzing about. There is a lot more but im going to keep quite about it for now.
Thanks for the interesting interview!
