Was ist dein Ansatz?
Was denkst du darüber?
Was kommt als nächstes?

Englische Version:
gyrofield represents a complete re-visioning of the Drum & Bass genre. Since bursting onto the scene in 2019 with her track „Out Of My Mind“ and the release of her first EP the same year, Evaluate Me, she“s drawn attention from DNB-headz across the globe and has been pegged as one of the rising stars of Drum & Bass production. Now the newest member of the acclaimed Drum & Bass collective Music Squad and dubbed “the princess of new wave Drum & Bass”, this unconventional outsider has been creating insanely fresh tracks which have had fans hooked. A true trailblazer for the future sounds of Drum & Bass joining the ranks of the likes of IMANU, Buunshin and Vorso, she has already released her debut EP on Overview Music this year (Tech Flex EP), drawing listeners with her punky, raw, textured, heavy, glitchy style and quickly establishing a cult following!
Baesse.de had a chat with this acclaimed musician about her art, how she’s developed her unique bass taste, and more.
Hi Kiana, thanks so much for agreeing to the interview! So give us a bit of background first – where are you from and where are you based at the moment?
I’m from Hong Kong and based in Hong Kong, though I will be living in Bristol for Uni starting September.
How’s the music scene in your hometown?
I never really got into the local scene but there are many underground electronic producers out there in many subgenres. Sometimes there are Techno/Drum & Bass/Industrial events somewhere.
Did you used to go out a lot, or prefer to stay in the studio cooking some beats?
I stayed inside all the time so I spent a lot of time doing music.
You describe yourself as a „dnb egirl“ – what does that mean to you?
It means I dont care
How did you first start producing music? Have you always produced as gyrofield?
I started making music on online midi sequencers and audio workstations like Audiotool before moving to FL Studio in 2016. By the time I started releasing music as gyrofield I had been making music for about two years.
You have a really distinctive style and a really eclectic approach to your productions which has stunned listeners with your freshness! What kind of musical journey did you take to arrive at your gyrofield sound today?
I’ve gone through a lot of different styles in just the last 3 years. When I was making my earliest material for gyrofield my music was darker and more industrial, then I started making ambient, techno and synth music going into 2018, had a synthpop/songwriting phase as well that year and I ended up focusing on Drum & Bass in 2019. These periods still influence the music I write now.
Was there a particular track or artist you heard that first sparked your interest in Drum & Bass?
The first Drum & Bass track that really blew me away was Noisia’s “Could This Be”. I heard it when it first came out and the sound design and drum work impressed me a lot. I wasn’t particularly interested in Drum & Bass until 2017 though, when I heard the stuff that was coming out like Overlook’s „Smoke Signals LP“ and Culprate’s „Dawn“. Those releases really got me wanting to make that style of music.
Do you feel that you had a “turning point” in your musical development, and if yes, what was it?
I think it was during 2016-2017 when I found some really forward thinking electronic music on Soundcloud from artists like False Noise, Alon Mor, Alexander Panos etc. It really broadened my view as to what was possible in this medium. At the same time I was getting into some dark Drum & Bass/Techno type stuff from labels like Samurai, Horo and UVB-76 and that also made me realize all the different colors and directions you could take a tune.
What’s your approach to music production?
I do everything in software, mostly my DAW. I make most of my sounds from scratch using synthesizers and I keep a lot of my sound design in a folder for later use. When I’m writing a track I either make new sounds or resample the samples I have saved up. I really like working on details so it often feels like I’m sculpting with sound to create music.
Can you tell us a bit about your studio tech set up?
I’ve been producing all my music in my tiny bedroom on Creative Speakers and AKG headphones for mixing, nothing else.
You are releasing two EPs this year right? „Tech Flex EP“ which came out in May, and am I right you have another one planned, „Synopsis“, coming out this year as well right? Can you tell us a bit more about those?
„Tech Flex“ was the result of a productive period after I had finished my first Drum & Bass EP, Evaluate Me. I learnt a lot from producing and also from a bunch of people in the scene I had just met like Mark (ABIS) & Felix from The Caracal Project, so I made a bunch of tracks and decided to bundle them into an EP. As for „Synopsis“, I started the tracks in March, when I really wanted to push my own limits of sound design and arrangement. It took until July for me to complete it but I ended up with four tracks that are high energy, very dynamic, with a lot of synths, and are just a little over the top.
One of the latest releases was your flowing single „Ergo“ with Skylark, just released on DIVIDID in June of this year. How did this project take shape? How did you come to work together with Skylark?
Thibault and I started talking shortly after my first EP “Evaluate Me” came out. A while later I showed him an old track I made back in June 2019, he really liked it and thought he could give his take on it. I worked on the track a bit more and sent the stems to him, and he wrote the whole track in a few days.
And you have a new track just dropped on 3rd August out on UKF’s Pilot imprint? Cant wait to skank to that! Can you tell us more?
It’s a liquid tune so you probably wouldnt skank to it, its called „Because You Are You“. It’s a very personal track to me, a lot of the synth work came from improvised takes so it gives the music a really honest delivery, I feel.
Many voices in the scene are pointing to your music as the future of Drum & Bass. What do you think about this? Where do you think Drum & Bass might be headed for the future?
I’m glad they think so, but I never really considered myself as a “Drum & Bass-Artist”. My music ends up being Drum & Bass by incidence, I just choose to make music that is interesting to me and it ends up at this particular tempo range. Bringing in a wide range of influences into the genre is bound to give good results with the right execution, and I hope to see more of that. Artists like Kimyan Law, IMANU and False Noise are leading that wave right now. New styles of Drum & Bass are emerging and some of the current styles are going to obsolesce, I believe.
So whats next for you? Where are you going to take us in 2021 and beyond?
I’ll be putting out more music that I believe in. Some of it isn’t drum and bass but I hope you will enjoy it regardless.
Reflective question: what would you say is most important to you in life?
My music, being happy in what I do, and the people I care about.
Thanks so much for the chat! Any „last words/comments“ for our readers?
