Was machst du beruflich?
I love it!!!
Pendulum – Hold Your Color (Noisia Remix)
Mefjus – Pivot
Und alles von Agressor Bunx!
Oh! Ich bin ebenfalls denen ihr grösster Fan. Was spricht dich da besonders an.
It is pure meditation!
Was steckt dahinter?
Produzierst du ausschliesslich “in the box”?
Pflanzen? Haha nice.

ENGLISH VERSION (Thanks Jasper Stauff/Miranda Lang!):
In the world of drum and bass, we have some producers that do not really aspire to always be in the spotlight through their public actions, but these are mostly the ones that put incredible amounts of effort and energy into their productions. The Lower Saxony Surge is one of them. He focuses on his beats instead of dropping huge social media announcements. That’s the reason why for now he is still not really known further than within the core scene, but that’s about to change because of his steady improving high class productions. His skills are undeniably and we at baesse.de are pleased to hear more about it now!
Hello Surge. You are kind of an insider tip in the German drum and bass world. But at first, we are curious, give us a short conclusion about yourself. How old are you? What do you do for a living? Where do you live?
My name is Marvin and I’m 26 years old. Originally, I come from Göttingen. For a couple of years now, I’ve been living in Hannover and work here for an EB-company which is connected to German public broadcast services.
How did you get into Drum & Bass?
I’ve studied music in Hannover and got to know a lot of nice people there. They introduced me to Drum & Bass, which I didn’t really have on the radar by then. To be honest, in the beginning, the music sounded kind of strange to my ears and I had to get used to it first. Today though, I can’t live without it and always need my daily dose!
Before I discovered drum and bass, I have also produced Techno, Goa and guitar stuff. But getting into Drum & Bass has definitely expanded the boundaries of producing music for me a lot. I love it!!!
Are there any groundbreaking tunes (or releases, or artists, or labels) for you personally that you would like to name here?
There are a lot, but here are my two favorites:
Pendulum – Hold Your Color (Noisia Remix)
Mefjus – Pivot
And everything by Agressor Bunx!
Oh! I’m also a huge fan of them! What exactly appeals to you about them? Why especially them?
I just enjoy that it’s such well thought-through and fully developed music with a crazy sound design. I have just fallen for these songs and others. Good produced brutality.
Would you say you’re rather a producer with DJ ambitions or the other way around, a DJ who is also producing?
I would classify myself in the category producer with DJ gigs. I’m not that much of a stage hog. Surely, sometimes I get flashed on stage, but preferably, I lock myself in for hours in the studio. That’s where I belong!
Alright, that means you’re pretty hooked already?
Definitely. Music takes in a huge part of my life and I invest a lot of time and energy into producing. It’s just a big passion for me. It’s pure meditation!
How would you describe your own sound?
In Drum & Bass, my sound is mainly dark, evil and destructive. I like technoid and disharmonic sound. But I can also play it smooth, on the guitar, a bit of reggae, bit of jazz.
Your name often comes up in connection with the Cologne based label Hanzom Music. What’s behind that?
I came to Hanzom Music through good friends (Kai of the BorkerBrothers, Smeerlapp). They are already active in the label for some time. These guys kind of smuggled me in there.
Are you producing exclusively ‘in the box’?
For some time, yes. But meanwhile, I occasionally dig out the microphone.
Which DAW do you use and why?
For years I’ve been using Ableton now and I don’t want a change. I’ve tried a few different candidates, but Ableton offers me and my workflow the best features. It is really clear and you can work fast with it. Without advertising: Ableton is the shit!
Are there special plugins that you like the best?
A must-have is, in my opinion, the Fabfilter Pro-Q3. In general, the Fabfilter and iZotope stuff (e.g., iZotope Trash 2) is great. For sound generation, I mostly use Serum and Vital. Regarding drums, I can recommend Addictive Drums.
You are sound designer through and through, and there are a lot of fellow producers who share their knowledge in shape of sample packs or presets. Are you into this as well?
A few associates and I have founded Laut Samples last year. That’s a sample pack and preset label for music producers. So I’m right in the center of the production of samples as well as presets and also take care of some of the organizational work pending.
And what do you do when you’re not in the studio? Are there things that you like to do as compensation?
Plants and nature give me quietness and are a good opposite pole to kicks, snares and bass. I collect different plants, take care of them and just enjoy being with them.
Moreover, I enjoy cooking as well as eating.
Plants? Haha, nice. What kind of plants are we talking about? Either a cactus or palm trees?
Definitely both and also everything else, for example crops, like tomatoes. A small cactus is actually standing on my producer desk for five years.
Would you like to say something to the people to close this interview?
Thank you guys for the great interview and stay safe!
We have to thank you and we wish you only the best for the future.
