Hallo Leute!
Jazzmatazz, The Interrupters uvm.
The City Is Burning gemacht.
Was hast du in der Pipeline?
Big up und weiter so!
Shell it!
Danke!

The new league of French Jungle Producers are on the rise and bringing grand things to the table. In the last few months tunes have been steadily delivered and gaining more attention is none other than Speaker Louis. His tunes are being released on well-known labels like Liondub or Deep In The Jungle, in DJ-Sets and various playlists, as well as dabbling in various collaborations. We had the chance to catch up with him in order to find out more about him.
How do you do Louis? How did you end up in London as a French man? Tell us a bit about yourself, like your age and how you earn your daily living?
Hi guys! Thanks for the interview. I’m 29 and I’m French, I moved to London in 2016 after living in Lyon. I’ve always been a big fan of the UK and of its music scene, so when I had a job opportunity that allowed me to move here, I did it without hesitating.
Apart from music I work in academia, mostly teaching Computer Science and Maths.
Your tracks are strictly Jungle, does that mean the new age genre (Rollers, Neurofunk, Jump Up) does not tickle your fancy?
I like most subgenres of Drum & Bass – Jump Up and Neurofunk are not really my thing but I love a good roller. Jungle is the most natural thing for me to produce, I really try to make music sincerely rather than imitating something, so I guess that’s why. But I have a lot of different things coming out in the future, in more ‘modern’ styles of dnb. What really matters to me is the flavour of jungle, the samples, the soul… It doesn’t have to be Amen breaks, it just needs this vibe!
What led you on this path? Since when are you a true Junglist?
My first love in music was punk rock, but after that it’s reggae and dub that led me to jungle. I’m a big fan of all flavours of sound system music, and about 10 years ago I became fascinated with modern electronic genres influenced by that kind of sound: jungle, dnb, dubstep…
What artists have left an impression on you? What Artists and/or tunes are your top five?
In the world of dnb, my favourite artist is Shy FX. He was a pioneer and he’s still on the top today, which is quite rare. I believe it’s because he’s an excellent songwriter: his tunes are huge club hits but they’re also catchy songs. That’s what I like the most.
Otherwise, I’m a big fan of Break as he’s got the perfect balance of warm vibes, simplicity and tight production. Serum has also influenced me a lot with his oldschool approach – he came from jungle and created a whole new sound that took over the dnb scene.
Do you listen to Drum & Bass/Jungle in your leisure time? What songs fill your playlist?
I listen to a lot of Drum & Bass, but not necessarily all the releases… Instead I tend to get obsessed about some tunes that really resonate with me and inspire me. In 2020 it was Shy FX’s remix album that blew my mind, for instance the Potential Badboy remix of Raggamuffin. A lot of Breakage too, for instance his remix of Break, MC Fats and Cleveland Watkiss – Conversations.
Outside dnb, I listen to a lot of reggae, hip-hop, punk rock and jazz. This year I’ve been rinsing artists like Ras Demo, Guru / Jazzmatazz, The Interrupters…
You have released tracks on Liondub and Deep In The Jungle. In your opinion, what labels are on fyah right now?
Liondub is an amazing label, mostly because of the passion of Liondub himself. His enthusiasm and his feedback helped me a lot, and he is definitely responsible for the success of many big artists in the scene. Another label that I really like working with is Hyperactivity Music, based in Marseille, France. The head of Hyperactivity, BRK, is one of the hardest working Frenchmen in the scene, very passionate and true to the craft! I also have started working with Nuusic, a rising UK label. I love these guys, they really do a lot for their artists. Check them out!
Original Key is also obviously a very important label for me as they allowed me to express my vibe and to enrich it with remixes, collabs…
What is the story behind the collaboration with Original Key Records?
I think it started with Oliver asking me for tunes, and I didn’t have much to send him at the time. I asked him if we could work with any vocalist, because I find the process super inspiring. He put me in touch with Blackout JA and we made The City Is Burning. It was really exciting to have such a catchy vocal tune, and it led to making a whole EP. More things are planned in the future!
Can you give us a teaser of what new things will be soon released and we can look forward to?
Yeah absolutely: all the tunes from my EP are getting remixed! So far we’ve had some amazing producers reworking my music: Isaac Maya, Gold Dubs… A few more are still to be released and you can expect something by one of the biggest names in dnb!
I’m so happy about those remixes, and about the fact that it’s such an international project… We have worked with producers from Mexico, UK, Italy, Brazil…
Do you enjoy collaborating with other artists?
I love collabs, I find it very inspiring especially when I have a bit of a writer’s block. This month I’m releasing a jungle EP with Epicentre on Nuusic, it’s been so fun to make together! In terms of sound, we managed to get the best of both worlds as Epicentre is very hardware based (he literally build his own equipment) and I work mostly on Ableton.
I’m also part of a band called La Phaze, we mix jungle / dnb vibes with punk rock and heavy guitar sounds. The other guys have 20 years of experience as producers / professional musicians so I’m learning a lot from collaborating with them!
We are nearing the end of our interview, is there anything you would like to add or share with our audience?
Thank you so much for supporting my music! I’d just suggest to take a listen to all the artists / labels I’ve mentioned because they’re all sick and you’ll probably like them too. Big up and keep up the good vibes!
Thank you for the interview and your time, we wish you continuing success on the scene. Shell it!
Thank you!
